Who will win the IPL 2nd Semi Final? CSK or Deccan Chargers?

Indian Premier League 2010 | Match: 2nd Semi Final – Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs Deccan Chargers (DC) | Day and Date: Thursday, 22nd April 2010 | Venue: Dr. D. Y. Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai | Watch the deferred Live Cricket Streaming from 8:05 pm | Or follow the live telecast of the 2nd Semi Final from 8:00 pm on Set Max – if you want to catch the pre-match programme, tune in at about 7:30 pm

The Mumbai Indians have already booked a place in the final of IPL 2010 with their convincing win over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 1st Semi Final match yesterday evening. Who will join Mumbai in the final? Will it be CSK or the Chargers from Hyderabad.

The Deccan Chargers are the defending IPL champions and in good form, having won their last 5 matches on the trot. Barring Gilchrist, their batsmen look in good nick. On the bowling front, Pragyan Ojha and Chaminda Vaas have delivered the goods for Hyderabad on more occasions than one. Can they make it six wins in a row?

Across the 3 IPLs, the Chennai Super Kings have been the most consistent team. They qualified for the final in the 1st edition of the IPL and in the 2nd they lost in the semi-final stage. Can they go one better this time?

Likely Teams:

  • Deccan Chargers (DC) Hyderabad:
    • 1. Adam Gilchrist (Captain, Wicket-Keeper, Foreign Player 1), 2. Andrew Symonds (Foreign Player 2), 3. Rohit Sharma, 4. Pragyan Ojha, 5. Chaminda Vaas (Foreign Player 3), 6. Tirumalasetti Suman, 7. Harmeet Singh, 8. Mohnish Mishra, 9. Rahul Sharma, 10. R.P. Singh and 11. Dwayne Smith (Foreign Player 4)
  • Chennai Super Kings (CSK):
    • 1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain, Wicket-Keeper), 2. Suresh Raina, 3. Suresh Badrinath, 4. Murali Vijay, 5. Muttiah Muralitharan, 6. Albie Morkel (Foreign Player 1), 7. Justin Kemp (Foreign Player 2), 8. R. Ashwin, 9. Shadab Jakati, 10. Dougie Bollinger (Foreign Player 3) and 11. Michael Hussey
  • Note: We predict that Matthew Hayden may be dropped for tonight’s game. He has been given a long enough run and he has been the big failure of IPL 3, so it may not be a prudent idea to carry his load into the semi-final.

What are the bookies predicting?

- Interestingly the bookies are backing Chennai Super Kings. This is interesting because the Deccan Chargers have beaten CSK both the times the two teams have met. On form too, DC look the side on the upswing.

It’s the Dhoni factor which seems to have made CSK the favourites with the bookies. The way Dhoni turned the deciding match in Dharamsala on its head sure has made an impact on the punters.

What are the betting odds for the 1st Semi Final of IPL 2010?

- A rupee bet on Deccan Chargers will fetch you a return of Rs.1.28 should the Hyderabad team win. On the other hand, you will only get 75 paise in return for a rupee bet on CSK. (Betfair)

- Even Will Hill favours CSK though the Odds they are offering are pretty weird. A rupee placed on DC will fetch you Rs. 1.10 and a rupee placed on CSK will give you 72-73 paise only. So stay away from Will Hill, as they seem to be factoring in too high a margin.

- Ladbrokes is offering identical odds on both the teams. You get 5 paise in return for every 6 paise you bet on either team. So if you are backing Deccan Chargers to win tonight’s semi-final match, you will find the best odds on Ladbrokes.

What is our prediction?

- We think there are 3 important factors that will play a role tonight: Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and Bollinger. Interestingly, they all belong to the yellow camp. If the Chargers can control 2 of these 3 factors, it should be a Charger win but if 2 of these players do well, we don’t see the CSK going out.
